Press Release: Designing Cultures Studio Announces Seed Funding

Seed funding for local visual communication designers

Singapore - October 22, 2021 – Designing Cultures Studio, an award-winning studio, announced today that it would support local visual communication designers to embark on self-initiative research and design projects through seed funding. The main goal of the seed funding is to encourage more designers to build a vivid visual communication community in Singapore and promote local visual communication design locally and internationally.

Designing Cultures Seeds was initiated by local graphic designers Alvin Ng and Jesvin Yeo. They met when they were students at NAFA and benefited a lot from becoming graphic designers. During their creative journey, they met many wonderful people who offered them with help and opportunities. They are very grateful for participating or designing exciting events such as the Singapore Youth Olympic Games, Red Dot in China, Cheongju International Craft Biennale, Beijing Design Week, London Design Festival and Venice Art Biennale. Now, they seek to give back by encouraging and empowering local designers to improve the world through visual communication design.

The seed fund is dedicated to Wei Wei, who provided Jesvin with a monthly allowance of S$50 during her study at NAFA. Wei Wei was only 21 years old at that time and has always been the source of motivation for this initiative.

The Designing Cultures Studio was founded in 2008 by Jesvin Yeo. It is a non-profit studio that explores new ways to spark and distil insight and addresses people’s needs through bold, optimistic design.

The inaugural Designing Cultures Seeds of S$5,000 was awarded to Death of Typography (DOT). Founded by three young designers, Wee Yen, Lee Qiu Wen and Sylvia Low, Death of Typography seeks to explore, practice and research typography through creative inquiry and collaboration.

The next open call for Designing Cultures Seeds will be held on October 22, 2022.
